On the future of the former Hirakubo Elementary School site
A request submitted to Ishigaki City on 29 July 2025
On 29 July 2025 we submitted a formal request concerning the use of the former Hirakubo Elementary School site to the Furusato Sōsei Division of Ishigaki City.
The school is a place that carries the history of the settlement of this area, and it stands for the nature, the culture and the ties between people that make Hirakubo what it is. That is exactly why we want to carry it forward.
Press reports had left us uneasy that the views of the community were not being properly reflected, so we set those views down in writing and delivered them to the division responsible.
The division chief and staff listened seriously. They undertook to include people from this community as members of the review committee to be convened, to reflect the community’s views properly, and to reply to us in writing.
The city’s reply
On 18 August 2025 Ishigaki City sent a formal written reply to the council.
